We’re back! We survived!

The first half of the 2010 cruise season is in the books.

In case you missed out on all the action while we were out at sea, here’s a look back at all the blogs that were written:

Next week the Sixthman blog will return to our regularly scheduled programming, and this Friday we’ll be back with the next episode of Sixthman TV!

I Was Wrong…

Dear Malt Shop Memories Cruisers –

Because Sixthman is a culture of accountability, I’ve got to hold myself accountable for the following presumption:

I thought you would be in bed by Midnight. Every night. Without fail.

Way to go above and beyond proving me wrong.

I’ve experienced shows from musicians that my Grandma Evelyn use to tell me about when I was little, danced in the disco with a nice couple from Michigan who just wanted to teach me a couple steps, laughed along with Lesley Gore’s great words of advice in the Q&A session, enjoyed reliving some of your favorite memories from your childhood, helped give you the Prom that some of you never had, introduced you to some of your teen idols face to face, and experienced this event through the eyes of a group of people I surely won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

This experience has made me a better staff member, more appreciative of the music by which all of today’s music was founded on, challenged me to think beyond what we’ve done and go a step beyond into what we will eventually become as a company, and given me the greatest gift of being able to connect with a generation that I had not really had any sort of grasp on before.

It has been a pleasure, Malt Shop Cruisers. Your stories, laughs, genuine feedback, and desire to become a community that we can be a part of is something I respect and am so happy I was a part of this year. Welcome to the Sixthman family. I can’t wait to see you again soon… with better ‘50s and ‘60s dance moves. Promise. Hold me accountable.

Thanks for the memories,

-Tiff

This is a guest post from Sixthman team member Calli, head usher on board the Malt Shop Memories Cruise.  Take it away Calli!

I have had the distinct honor on the Malt Shop Memories Cruise of being the head usher along with the incomparable Dave Scruggs in the Main Room, which basically means that the Paris Lounge has become my home away from home for the last four days. We’ve had a center floor seat for all of our headlining shows and it has been utterly fantastic!

The music that was produced in the 50s was so good and so much of it is dear to my heart having grown up with a mother and grandmother who played these oldies all the time. While cleaning the house, while running errands, or during our family dinner parties. My personal favorite was always Ricky Nelson. Sadly, he passed way too early.

I want to talk a little bit about Little Anthony and the Imperials.

I’ve seen this show twice now, once on Friday and once again last evening. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this man “brings it” like no other artist I’ve seen on any of our cruises. He is 70 years old. Thing about that for a moment. I’ve been singing his praises in our nightly staff meeting over and over. If you are a young artist working on honing in on and perfecting your craft, get thee to an Imperials show, stat. Watch how it’s done. Watch someone who’s been doing it since the age of 15 who still brings every bit of his heart and soul on a stage.

A lot of our staff have gotten to usher in the Paris Lounge each night, but we’ve been doing rotating shifts so many of my teammates haven’t gotten to see this performance. I decided after he ended his show last evening (with a version of a Police song that dare I say, wipes the floor on any other artist that has performed it) that I’m going to get on the radio tonight alert all staff to come to main room and watch this final number. Being that he is closing down the Paris Lounge on this cruise, this may be the last time any of us has the opportunity to see it. I can’t think of a better way to go out.

I am more of a fan of the Imperials now than I ever was before. This live show is a sight to behold and a true honor for any music fan. So whatever you’re doing tonight Sixthman Staffers, at 10:50, get your fannies to the Paris Lounge, stat.

You can thank me at the staff meeting.

-Calli

“So, where can we dance?”

This is the question we were asked more than any other this afternoon as guests walked onto the ship. It’s now 10 o’clock, there’s not an empty spot at any slot machine or table in the casino, Gino Monopoli (our resident Elvis Tribute Artist) is playing to an overflowing promenade crowd, and Herb Reed and the Platters are rocking a Paris Lounge and there’s not an empty seat in the house.

Despite all of this, the loudest noises on the entire ship are coming from a relatively empty cigar bar, where four members of my family are screaming at the top of their lungs while watching the Celtics game broadcasted in Spanish on ESPN Deportes.

Yup, this is a Sixthman cruise.

Six hours in, this ship is rockin’…in a good way. I can’t wait until our staff meeting is over so I can meet up with the family at the blackjack table…if I can find a spot.

Until next time.

The Season Finale

Tomorrow, we had out to sea for our final cruise of the early 2010 season: The Malt Shop Memories Cruise!

This cruise is going to be a slight departure from our last cruise (Kid Rock’s “Chillin’ the Most” Cruise), but there are actually more similarities than you’d imagine.  Both groups have a strong affinity for their particular brand of music, both groups are excited to spend four days on a ship with their musical idols, and both groups are ready to let loose and have one heck of a vacation with 2,000 strangers who will quickly become friends.  Kid Rock’s Cruise was one of the best cruises we’ve ever produced as a company, and we’re fully expecting to build on that momentum this weekend too.

I’m particularly excited for this cruise, as it will serve as a quasi family reunion for me! My folks have been on the past two Cayamo cruises; my “early to bed” dad would always take a nap from 8PM to midnight and then meet me at midnight in the casino after our staff meeting had ended.  About two months ago, my father woke up in the middle of the night and lamented, saying “aw man, if we were on a Sixthman Cruise…I could go meet Steve in the casino right now.”

The next day, my mom called and asked if there were any other events coming up that they could come on;  after about half a second into my explanation of the Malt Shop Cruise, they were ALL OVER IT.  A week later they called and said that my brother and sister wanted to go too, and who was I to tell them no?

So, the Malt Shop Memories Cruise will be the first “family vacation” the whole Kamb family has taken in years.

Although I’ll be working all day, I am really looking forward to hanging out with the whole fam from midnight to 2 am every night in the casino.  I can’t wait to hear “Under the Boardwalk” by the Drifters, because I’ve been listening to that song since I was a little kid growing up on Cape Cod.  I’m excited to watch 2,000 people go back in time to the 50′s and 60′s.

Most of all, I looking forward to seeing a LOT of smiles.

Stay tuned RIGHT HERE for more updates while we’re sailing.

Here we go!

Wow.

I had the pleasure of being one of the first people off the ship this past Monday, which meant I got to see almost all the guests as they came off (hopefully) the best vacation of their lives.  It’s a pretty awesome feeling to get hugs from 2,000 hungover, bleary-eyed, and smiling cruisers who had NO idea who Sixthman was just four days prior.  As April so eloquently put it, “man, working outside saying bye to the guests is great for your self-esteem.”  I know it made me feel ten times better.

Big thanks to Kid Rock for being an absolutely incredible host, and big thanks to all of the guests on board who being so respectful of the man (the Kid?).

In case you missed out on our adventures while we were cruising, check them out here:

As you can tell from these articles, when things like “most memorable night ever” “best seat in the house,” and “what hosts are made of,”  this cruise was epic on all levels.  There’s already tons of buzz around NEXT year’s plans…

I already can’t wait.

###

“It’s my boat motha f***a!!!!”

Yep. 1:15am on early Sunday morning. Mark it. Surprise DJ show by Kid Rock… ANNOUNCED by Kid Rock… over the PA and into every available space (including passenger cabins) on board.

As a still fairly new employee of Sixthman, I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing the other Sixthman cruises with artist hosts, but I’ve got to tell you – the bar has been set and then continuously raised day after day by the Kid. Here are some highlights:

BOARDING DAY

Take a photo with all guests as they board? Sure. Why not. In fact, it was HIS idea. As he put it later on in the day at his first (of many) unannounced appearances on the boat “I just wanted to get the pink elephant in the room out of the way because I just want to chill with y’all on the boat.” – Fair enough, Mr. Rock.

WHAT, A SAIL AWAY SHOW?

As you’ve read already, 2000 shots of Jim Beam from Kid Rock himself were passed around and raised into the air. Kid wanted something for his fans to extend beyond typical three hour show and into a full blown Kid Rock experience. I’d say they got that message loud and clear from day one.

KID ROCK HEADLINING SHOWS

Needless to say, we’ve seen some pretty spectacular shows onboard our cruises over the years. I’ve never seen a bigger connection between audience and host as I experienced watching Kid Rock (and his AMAZING band, the Twisted Brown Trucker Band) rock every single face off in the Paris Lounge on Friday and Saturday. Something extraordinary was created that can’t ever be replicated for those not in the room.

FAMILY PORTRAIT

Kappy made the announcement from the Lido Deck that our group photo, also known as the Kid Rock Family Portrait, was about to be taken and sure enough a man with a yellow hat and some red shorts comes walking out. Who’s going to miss the photo with all his family? Not the Kid. That’s for damn sure.

OH, YOU WANT A DANCE PARTY?

You’ve got one. Like I said before, Kid Rock made an announcement into every single cabin at about 1:15am basically reiterating the fact that sleep is entirely overrated and unless this boat is docked in Tampa, your butt should be out on the deck and not in the bed. Kid DJ’d for over an hour and a half out under the stars to the packed out deck. These guests bring the party, with the ultimate party host leading the way.

Beyond all these highlights, Kid Rock has been everywhere at any given time of day, giving high fives, speaking to his fans, taking photos, and signing anything thrown his way. There is a difference between being the name of the cruise that gets people booked and excited about the trip… and actually BEING the cruise.

Living up to and then exceeding the hype. Turning just a trip that hard-earned money was handed over for in August and September of last year into extremely well spent time on the experience of a lifetime. Having those moments that you can never recreate but can replay in your head for the next year and have stories to tell that will make everyone you know not only jealous, but maybe into a new Kid Rock fan. These are things that Kid Rock has spearheaded and vowed to do as long as this boat is still moving, and in that case – can we just never go back?

Kid Rock, on behalf of Sixthman, we’ll have you as our seventh man any day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

-Tiff

Kid Rock, you are one hell of a host.

Yesterday will go down as one of the most memorable, interesting, and enjoyable days in Sixthman history. I will attempt to do it justice, but words can really only do much.

Here we go.

Pimps and h…ladies of the night.

Because this is a first year cruise, we weren’t sure what to expect when it came to theme night participation. Usually it takes a year or two for people to “get it” before we get a good majority involved. Sure, we’ll have a few people join in, but many come ill-prepared or just aren’t ready to pack crazy clothes for a vacation.

Not Kid Rock’s Chillin’ the Most Cruise.

I’d guess that at least 75% of the population on board participated in last night’s Pimps and Hos Night, including one creative gentleman who dressed up like Tiger Woods. If there was an award for best costume, he would have won in a land slide.

Seriously, I saw a ridiculous amount of leopard print and and giant floppy hats, fishnets and high heels, wide eyes and smiles. This crowd is here to party, and they are having the time of their lives.

Kid Rock’s Main Show

Last night was also our first main stage show of the cruise.

Wow.

Like a incredibly high-quality variety act, Kid Rock did it all: rapping, singing, guitar-playing, piano-playing, turntable scratching, jumping, dancing, and screaming. Remember that Sportscenter commercial where Lance Armstrong was on a stationary bike generating power for the whole office? If you could bottle Kid Rock’s energy from stage last night and use it to power the ship, we’d be half-way to Europe right now.

“Epic” is the best word I can come up with here, but it still isn’t enough.

The Crowd

Now, what happened OFF the stage last night made this a night I’ll never forget. Imagine 1000 pimps and hoes dancing in unison, waving their arms in time, jumping in sequence, and singing every word to every song, for two hours straight. Like a giant choreographed dance scene from a Hollywood movie, everybody knew exactly what to do.

It was unbelievable.

After the show ended, we sat around the office and shared stories about our adventures ushering the crowd during the performance. Everybody told a story or two, all of which were hysterical, then Sixthman team member Dave stood up, pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, and said, “I have five stories to tell.” Unfortunately, none of these stories can be repeated in a public forum. By the time Dave was done, there were tears in my eyes from laughing so hard, and my jaw hurt from repeatedly falling all the way to the floor.

Like in the movie “Old School,” if there were kids present in the room we would have had to tell them “EARMUFFS!”

Ty Stone

I had the pleasure of introducing Ty Stone yesterday afternoon. Having never met the man, I went over to introduce myself and ask if there’s anything special he wanted me to say.

Before I got any words out, he gave me a huge handshake, grinning ear to ear, and said “I am having the time of my life on this ship. Honestly, this is the coolest thing I’ve ever done…and I’ve done some pretty cool stuff! I seriously woke up this morning downright giddy.”

When the artists are having more fun than the fans, I know we’re doing something right.

Uncle Kracker

I was lucky enough to catch some of Uncle Kracker’s lido deck show last night. Happy to be alive, happy to be on the ship, and happy to be doing what he’s doing, Uncle Kracker kicked ass. After telling a hilarious story about Kenny Rogers, he covered “The Gambler” in such a way that the song became his own.

Sorry Kenny, Kracker one-upped ya.

At one point while standing behind the stage, I noticed a guy around my age in the front row of the concert who looked like a little kid on Christmas. Just one glance at his giant smile, which was permanently frozen on his face, and you could tell that he was continually telling himself, “there is NO place I’d rather be than right here, right now.”

When I can SEE that feeling on somebody’s face without having to actually hear it in words, I know we’re doing something right.

Blackjack Madness

After catching Mickey Avalon’s set up on Lido at 1AM (which I couldn’t pull myself away from), I met up with Kappy, Lauren, and Jenna (Lauren’s sister) for some blackjack. After treading water for about an hour, we were joined at the table by a man named Jay. Everybody’s luck immediately changed, and for the next four hours our table went on a hot streak that would have made Rainman proud. Now, normally I stay away from any gimmicky bet like the “Fun Pair,” but last night things were going so well and we were all having so much fun screaming “I’M FUN PAIRING IT UP!” that we all started throwing five bucks into the little circle above our normal bet.

By the end of the night, we had pulled all of the chairs away from the table so that we could run around screaming while doing the airplane from hitting the fun pair so many times.  Ridiculous.

So, Jaybird from Ann Arbor, thanks for changing the mojo at the table. And thanks for being the man. We’ll see you tonight, back at the tables, around 1AM when we’re done working.

Bahamas!

I’d write more, but I can hear Nassau calling my name. Time to go throw on a pair of board shorts, put on my sun glasses, and “go to work.”

I like my job.

A lot.

Trivial Pursuits

Have you ever seen Axl Rose & Slash try to spell “asphyxiation” backwards?

Artist vs artist trivia went something like that today… we had Not quite Axl & Not quite Slash, members of  Appetite for Destruction, competing against members of The Mighty Dan Halen and Leroy Powell & the Messengers for a pretty sweet prize- the coveted Golden Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots.

If you’ve ever been on one of our cruises, the artist vs artist trivia isn’t a new concept – it is a crowd favorite on the Rock Boat, and it draws a crowd on Simple Man Cruise every time. This being a brand new cruise, no one was sure what to expect. The artists were game for anything, and host Mickey Avalon took a crash course in scoring, and they began!  Mickey asked the tough questions- “Do you think you’re better than me?” “Rush or Journey?” “What’s your room number?”  When no one could spell “asphyxiation” backwards, he let them try to spell it forwards, and ended up awarding points to anyone who tried. In fact, he used several unique scoring methods…

In all, trivia was a resounding success!

It was hilarious, and it endeared some new bands to some new fans, and really showed who has the brains on the boat. For the record, I never want to go up against The Mighty Dan Halen in any trivia challenge. They were the runaway winners, and I know they’ll never let their competitors forget it.
