I made my virgin voyoge on TRB in '03, and only knew Edwin McCain by name. I trusted in my friend, Angie who asked me atthe last minute to be her cabin mate to guide me in the shows. I couldn't wait to book in 04.
The majority of the music I listen to I have discovered because of Sixthman and hearing new bands who are opening for my favorite bands I discovered thanks to TRB. I have enjoyed Sister Hazel, Pat McGee Band, Sons of William, Bain Mattox, Oval Opus, Marc Broussard and so many others.
Thanks for making such a great selection of artists available.
Melanie Mullikin

PS: Can we have another Sixthman Sessions show this year, preferably somewhere Iris can get to the show. Wheelchairs and the stairs at Smith's don't work very well together.

Andy , I'm a 4 year TRB alumni and each year you bring new talent to the forefront that fills my tank for the next year. I just heard a band on 103.7 in Seattle ( this station plays Carbon Leaf , Marc Broussard , Tyrone Wells , Matt Nathanson , Augustana , etc ) that I think has Sixthman all over them. Give a listen to The Avett Brothers. New to me , but judging from their videos at sold out venues and crowd reaction , many know them. They are talented , but also FUN . See ya' in '11 for 11 !

Hi Andy,

I know that coming from across the pond, my views are probably not that standard among Rock Boaters but I totally agree with finding some artists further along in their careers.

Over many years of attending the Rock Boat, the artists that we have enjoyed the most have been the ones that we had ‘a little of’ in our CD collection, never really toured the UK and had a good back catalogue of albums e.g. The Clarks, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Tonic, Better than Ezra and Stroke9. You have done it again for us this year with Nada Surf – we have been asking for them for years and know that TRB will love them!

It is also nice to see the totally new bands (as in just starting out) too, but their lack of material can make it hard to want to see them more than once let alone over multiple boats.

Looking forward to seeing who you find in further announcements!

Michelle

(p.s. How about David Mead? – excellent back catalogue, extremely talented and plays well with other musicians – how could you resist!!!)

What I loved most about the earlier rock boats was the way it brought different fan communities together, so I'll definitely miss more "established" artists. I discussed with my cabinmates (yes, I'm booked) what we thought would happen this year, and we did predict that the lineup would be "new" but, once again, we've decided to trust sixthman and enjoy whatever they throw our way. So, bring it on :)

That said, I would love to see the Clarks and ingram hill back...

I booked this morning and now I wish I had waited. Had I seen this blog beforehand, I would have. :/

But, I'm going to just close my eyes and trust the knowledge that Sixthman has (for the most part) steered us in the right direction of great music.

Add another vote for the Clarks, and a suggestion for The Beggar's Guild.

Kudos Andy! Given your ability in the past to "see a diamond in the rough", I look forward to what you'll introduce us to on XI. Looking back over the last 3 RBs, there's definately been some fequent flyers (admittedly including bands I love). A lot of new blood or returnees who have been absent the last several boats would be great.

I would like to add my voice to the call for David Mead, the Clarks, VaCo, and Ingham Hill.

Great points Andy, and I agree that more 'established names' would help certainly in bringing in new blood to the family.

But it's also important to remember those vets that come back each year and only have the boat as their opportunity to see certain bands. For example, a band like Wideawake doesn't really tour that much...so for most (at least those not luckly like me to live in their hometown) don't get to see the guys but that one time a year.

Also, many bands that have been on in the past, but haven't been on in a few years are deserving of being 're-discovered' by the newer class of vets that never got to see them on TRB. It's great to run contests like done for X to vote a vet back on, but I feel it really hurt the chances of some of the bands that haven't had their name on the lineup for 3+ years due to the increase in these newer vets accounting for a big voting bloc. And yes, this is my plea for The Clarks, VACO, and Ingram Hill ;)
