Game Day Jitters

The Rock Boat XI goes onsale today to guests who sailed with us on TRB X last month and it feels like Game Day.  I always get nervous on these days because even though we have been blessed with quick sell outs the past few years, we inevitably make many people happy and just as many frustrated with our choice of artists, port and dates.  And if anyone wants to make everyone happy, it’s me.

Picture 1This year is especially interesting because we are making a conscious decision to make The Rock Boat a place to discover new artists we think you should know about.  That means less familiar names on the marquee and more faith in Sixthman to assemble a better lineup than the previous year.  It also means less returning artists from the prior year.  When we look back on the past 10 years where we witnessed Zac Brown, Marc Broussard, Stephen Kellogg, Wideawake, Gaelic Storm, Blackberry Smoke, Green River Ordinance, Tyrone Wells, Will Hoge and others go from newcomers to Rock Boat heroes, it just reinforces our commitment to discovering new artists.

Why the anxiety?  I had a long conversation with a loyal guest on Friday about how important it is to at least give the 60% of the guests who return each year some familiar artists so they can recruit friends to try The Rock Boat.  I had never thought about it that way.  We ended up having a great debate and I walked away committed to finding a couple artists who are further down the road with their career and inviting them to join us for TRB XI.  That should give us a good balance without taking the emphasis away from discovering new bands.

So think of us today as guests are making the decision to join us next January, wait a few months to see how the lineup shapes up or choose to sit out one year.  We will be making our guesses, ringing the bell at sales milestones and grateful for our good fortune to be here.

I promise that we have not done our best work yet and The Rock Boat will go to 11 next January.

I made my virgin voyoge on TRB in '03, and only knew Edwin McCain by name. I trusted in my friend, Angie who asked me atthe last minute to be her cabin mate to guide me in the shows. I couldn't wait to book in 04.
The majority of the music I listen to I have discovered because of Sixthman and hearing new bands who are opening for my favorite bands I discovered thanks to TRB. I have enjoyed Sister Hazel, Pat McGee Band, Sons of William, Bain Mattox, Oval Opus, Marc Broussard and so many others.
Thanks for making such a great selection of artists available.

PS: Can we have another Sixthman Sessions show this year, preferably somewhere Iris can get to the show. Wheelchairs and the stairs at Smith's don't work very well together.

Andy , I'm a 4 year TRB alumni and each year you bring new talent to the forefront that fills my tank for the next year. I just heard a band on 103.7 in Seattle ( this station plays Carbon Leaf , Marc Broussard , Tyrone Wells , Matt Nathanson , Augustana , etc ) that I think has Sixthman all over them. Give a listen to The Avett Brothers. New to me , but judging from their videos at sold out venues and crowd reaction , many know them. They are talented , but also FUN . See ya' in '11 for 11 !

    Hi Andy,

I know that coming from across the pond, my views are probably not that standard among Rock Boaters but I totally agree with finding some artists further along in their careers.

Over many years of attending the Rock Boat, the artists that we have enjoyed the most have been the ones that we had ‘a little of’ in our CD collection, never really toured the UK and had a good back catalogue of albums e.g. The Clarks, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Tonic, Better than Ezra and Stroke9. You have done it again for us this year with Nada Surf – we have been asking for them for years and know that TRB will love them!

It is also nice to see the totally new bands (as in just starting out) too, but their lack of material can make it hard to want to see them more than once let alone over multiple boats.

Looking forward to seeing who you find in further announcements!

    Michelle

(p.s. How about David Mead? – excellent back catalogue, extremely talented and plays well with other musicians – how could you resist!!!)
