Picture 5They invented the phone around 100 years ago, have had major competitive advantages by owning the lines in the ground and have considerable resources to defend their territory.  Yet I have never been impressed with their product, prices or service.  I also have not had an alternative until now.

Today I celebrate saying goodbye to Bellsouth.  You can have the land line that we use to make one call a day and only have because of our alarm company.  You can have the long distance which is free from my cell phone and you can have the crappy internet service that you claim is broadband yet I have to call you to come look at it every 3 months because it is acting like dial up.

My alarm company has a wireless service I can add for a few dollars a month so I don’t have to have a land line anymore.  Maybe you could have gotten into the home security business when you realized about 5 years ago that cell phones would make land lines obsolete and faxing was being displaced by scanning and emailing.

And I am happy to move my internet to a company called CLEAR to give me great internet at home, at work and when I travel for a fraction of the cost for a faster connection.  I will say better service because at least they have a phone number on their website I can call if I have questions as opposed to me having to click 4 screens to find out how to talk to someone that I have paid $115.00 a month for the last 15 years.

What are the lessons here?

How about if you have a big lead in a race, put your energy into running faster rather than trying to trip up your competition.  Or make it easy for people who pay you $115 a month to reach you if they have a question.

Anyone else want to pile on?

Andy

MySpace is facing a similar battle. They were the cream of the crop, getting purchased for big bucks just a few years back. Then, they stopped the innovation, increased ads all over the place, and suddenly they’ve found themselves getting DESTROYED by facebook and struggling to play catch up.

I wonder which company on top will be the next to fall…

I am so totally looking into Clear. I have had it with Comcast and the constant lack of customer appreciation. I have been a customer for 8 years now and I CAN’T get a break on my internet/TV costs? Seriously? If I want to downgrade my package it actually costs me more than I pay now for services I don’t even want to use? Kiss it Comcast.

I bet on Facebook because they are always improving the product and giving you new reasons to join and stay with it. Either they are guessing right or they have some great ways to get real feedback.

In 1955, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P Supermarkets) had 15,000 stores, and hundreds of manufacturing facilities. They produced their own coffee, tea, milk, sugar, flour, etc. They were the largest food retailer in the world.
In 1955, Harley Davidson owned 95% of the American Motorcycle market.
In 1955 Zerox produced 90% of the copy machines manufactured in America.
In 1985, A&P had dropped out of the top 50 Supermarkets, Harley was getting killed by Japanese motorcycles, and Zerox had faded with the introduction of Faxes, and the infant Web. (Al Gore did NOT invent the Web).

Today, A&P has less than 500 stores, and reports Quarterly losses in the millions. Zerox is a shell.
However, Harley made a come back. They BRANDED clothing, sunglasses, accessories, and produce one of the best bikes made. (they even tried to copywrited the SOUND that their pipes make).
The lesson…. every dog has their day. If you are on top, or out in front, DON”T STOP WORKING to be the best.

I agree with Steve’s Dad. When we stop trying to be the best, we have given up. If we are the best, you can bet your bippie that there’s someone else out there saying, “Hey, I could do better than them….” Well, bring it on, Sixthman has the ability to stay on top!

Interesting business lessons here. I continue to wonder why I have a land line, except that AT & T Wireless’ “More bars everywhere” tag line for me continues “…except at my house).
