Me and the fashion industry have a long, embattled past. They keep coming up with crazy fashions only petite, bric-a-brack sized people look good in, and I keep telling them to stick it where the sun don’t shine. I am not a small woman. I am 5′9″. I have freakishly long legs. When I skate, I am constantly tripping people, and I can take up the width of most of the track with my leg span. My stride is VERY impressive. When I do lunges, I need more space than most people because my lateral motion is just too much. Skirts that hit most people’s thighs are minis on me.

So, with these freakishly long legs, why do I find it impossible to find a pair of jeans that I don’t have to roll up? My friend had a pair of jeans that no longer fit her, but were my size. I told her I would take them, and she warned me, “they’re a little long.”

“Long on you,” I thought. “Shorty.”

I put the jeans on, and they were so long, they covered my feet and hung out below my toes. What kind of person wears jeans this long? I could have skipped wearing shoes altogether.

I thought those jeans were a peculiarity, until I went jean shopping. I could not find a single pair in the store that was made for someone who does not wear 4 inch heels under them. Obviously, these designers don’t understand that chicks who wear jeans every day do not wear heels every day. ESPECIALLY THE REALLY TALL ONES. Seriously. I should not have to wear jeans marked “short.” Ever. For any reason. I am not short.

I am tall, and very happy with it. So please, fashion industry, for the love of Pete, will you please produce something normal people actually want? Something functional? Something that doesn’t require me to shove my rather large feet into an uncomfortable and unhealthy shoe, simply so I can wear a casual pair of jeans? Thank you in advance.

@LilRed - I was coming here to post that exact thing. Except try being 4'10"... the ONLY saving grace is that I can buy kids sized chucks which are cheaper and have cooler designs :P

I've been doing that. My beef is that, as a tall person, to make up for the fact that I hit my head a lot and can't get comfy in car or airplane seats, I should be able to find jeans that are the correct length.

OK. Rant over. Moving on to more productive things, like stretching my belly so I have room for everything Taste of Chicago has to offer.
  • Just a tip for all of you, I know it seems like a pain, but it's only a few dollars to go to a tailor and have them hemmed to your perfect size. I know it sounds extravagant, but growing up with a grnadmother who was a seamstress helps me remind myself when I have these problems that a fix is usually easy and not too pricey. I have the long leg issue, regulars are too short even in flip flops, and longs require 4 inch heels to not hang on the floor.... I pay my local tailor $4 to hem them, and it supports a local small business that seems to be endangered.

I wish the fashion industry would size women's pants like they do mens. Standard waist measurements and length measurements. It seems like sizes are all relative these days. That would make the (fashion) world a better place!

Ugh... I'm with you Barb. And Lo- I love the Gap Curvy jeans.

That and shirts that are only made to fit stick figures...

Babs, I have the same problem with jeans. For a long time I wore guy's jeans because the measurements were more exact. And then one day I looked in the mirror and realized they look stupid on girls.

Now the ones I've found that fit the best are at Gap...either the Long and Lean or Curvy Straight styles. Both in Long.

Ok, so you're tall, 5'9" is impressive. But what about us that are 5' period. Try finding anything short enough. The skirts that show as mini's on you, show as maxi skirts on me. I can buy capri's and wear them as long pants. Now some people would tell me to just shop in the little girls department. Actually, I have, for slips, etc. But at my advanced age, hmmm, don't ask, I would rather not look like a 10 year old. And, they may be short enough, but unless I lost about 100 more lbs, they are too skinny. I tried shopping at 5-7-9, the store for petites. That was funny, as I may be short, but no one ever said short equates with small. I'm healthy, not huge, just not tiny. As for shoes, didn't the shoemakers ever hear that "normal" size women like cute shoes too. That would be us that are short, but big feet! And wide feet! I spent my summers growing up running barefoot everywhere and the feet just kept spreading. So shoemakers, ask us real women what we need. Please!
