What business are we in?

WagonLegend has it that when the automobile was invented, instead of the stagecoach companies using their expertise with wheels, suspensions and comfortable seats to join the transportation revolution, they considered themselves to be in the stagecoach business and not the automobile business.  It proved to be costly for them.

The recent publicity around themed cruises has our phones ringing with some ideas we never thought we would hear.

We are always looking deeper to understand why the concept has been working for us and are constantly reminding ourselves to make sure each event is made of the right ingredients.

Music has defined us to date but we believe we are in the business of bringing communities together to celebrate their passion for life, discovery, friendship and a particular affinity.

So when we got a call from Gina Halladay from Quiltersbuzz.com about a cruise for quilters, we saw it as an opportunity to test our theory.  Gina is one of the premier authorities in quilting and has a blog that is visited by thousands of quilters each day.  She joined us on the Mayercraft Carrier last week and explained to us how there is a healthy community of quilters who she believes will flock to the idea of cruising with their favorite fabric designers and connecting with other quilters from around the world.

Does this mean we would trade in our guitars and drums for sewing machines and irons?  We intend on applying what we know about gathering people for a vacation experience and discovering what business we really are in.  Is it Music or Community?

Why are we excited?  We believe that when you ask someone “What do you love to do when they aren’t working, parenting, sleeping or eating?” you will get some great answers like quilting or roller derby or play video games.  For many of these affinities, there are already local and online communities thriving around them.  We want to invite them to come on vacation and see what happens.

Beyond Quilting, Roller Derby and X-Box, anyone know some other affinities or hobbies we should be looking for?

    Photography.

I’ve heard of several different photography based cruises before but have held off because I’ve been spoiled by Sixthman.

I think it would be a great opportunity, especially if you partnered with someone like David Hobby who runs Strobist: http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/

It already has a vibrant community based around it and I think it would lend itself easily to your style of events.

The cruise would be a great opportunity for classes and group discussions. The ship has plenty of shoot locations that would create amazing photographs. And, best of all, shore excursions provide ample opportunity to shoot.

Ok, I’m super excited just thinking about it. How can I help make this happen?

Definitely adult league slow pitch softball. ;-)

I like the idea of expanding (and would love a photography convention of sorts like Brenda mentioned), but I feel like you guys have the edge on a SUPER unique market, and that is freakin’ awesome!

However, if expanding to other cruises means you’ll have to open an LA office… well, just tell me where to apply.

    Knitting.
Seriously. There are some hard-core knitters out there and some famous knitters who have a huge following.
Check out: Ravelry.com http://www.ravelry.com/ – HUGE online knitting/crochet community that has exploded over the last 18 months or so.

The Yarn Harlot – aka Stephanie McPhee. She has a huge fan base. http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/

Cookie A – sock designer with an almost cult-like following. http://www.cookiea.com/

    Don’t think I’m crazy.

We are only doing this so we dont go to hell for all the stuff that happens on the music cruises…..

    Andy,

I have been invited to several Techie cruises where software development classes are on the agenda. C#, VB, .NET, ASP to name a few.

Another one I have been invited to (as I am one) is a travel agent cruise. This cruise offers classes on specific types of travel such as cruises, land packages, hotel packages, Disney packages, and many more. It is like a Travel Agent conference at sea!! You can even earn your CLIA license on the cruise as well.

Some other ones you may think about would be like Star Wars, Star Trek, and maybe some Sports oriented cruises. You could even think about some pure gambling cruises where the casino is on the complete “ship” and not just on the Promenade.

I’m with Rhonda – knitting…I was just coming over to post that (I get the blog on RSS) and she beat me to it.

I would also say scrapbooking – huge industry that has done cruises in the past, but I bet they’re nothing like a Sixthman event.

I was looking at a winery website in my area and stumbled upon this ad: http://www.notavivavineyards.com/pdf/cruiseflier.pdf

Wine cruise! It looks like they are starting out small (16 cabins in total for their group).

Im with Brenda on the idea of a photography cruise :)

I second the scrapbook idea. I’d also look into partnering with whoever does the country music cruises — they are very popular as well. (I think the Grand Ole Opry did an Opry cruise one time…)

Also — Nick does a kid’s/family cruise. It’s SPENDY SPENDY. As a mom of two small kids (under 10) I’d LOVE to do a more affordable family vacation cruise, and even moreso, would LOVE to support a company like Sixthman with my (extremely tightly budgeted) vacation money. I would LOVE to see a music/kids cruise (think quality music acts who can do G rated shows for the kids…kids’ comedians, activities, etc. — and people who can turn it up a notch for mom and dad in the evening.)

    Andy,

My mother and her friends drop some serious coin for scrapbook cruises run by companies that suck. She was on the Mayercraft last year and thought it was great. I think if you guys did a scrapbook cruise with special guests, you could EASILY fill that boat…

The ones that she’s been on have been partially a regular cruise with some classes thrown in for the 150 or so scrapbookers.

Promotion for this kind of thing is super easy…

I’ll be sure to have her bring that up when we come visit you!

    Andy!
This is so cool! You guys are amazing! I have always known that…but this totally confirms it!
I love the Twilight idea! That would sell-out in record time!
Why dont you have a World of Warcraft one with Blizzard entertainment? My husband can go and I will just sit on deck the entire time!
    Talk to you soon!

Ok, so I already mentioned it once, but I really am pulling for the photography cruise.

What brought me back is actually a recommendation of someone else to speak to…Atlanta based editorial music photographer Zack Arias. He’s done some pretty successful workshops and has a DVD out. Since he’s in your back yard, it might be a good resource.

    So, really, pretty please?
