Remember when I said I had the best job in the world?  Understatement of the century.

Last night after our staff meeting (around midnight), I wandered around the ship to see where the action was going to be.  After 15 minutes or so, I found myself in the casino (shocker), and I heard, “Lauren!  Get over here!”  Andy and Brandi Carlile were at it again at the Blackjack table.  We had all played together the previous night and found a great rhythm, so I sat down at the table with them, Sonia Leigh, and our photographer, Will.

After 2+ hours of hooting and hollering, finding out who was “first date” or “second date,” and way too many lucky pulls, we were all collectively up around $1500.  Fine by me!

We took our money and ran to the smallest venue we have on the ship – which we typically use for our open jam room.  There is a baby grand piano in there, and Brandi, Vienna Teng, and even a few guests (who were great!!) took turns jumping up and playing songs.  I put a video up on YouTube with Brandi, Vienna, and the Twins singing a Simon and Garfunkel song…but Sony told me it was  copyright infringement and took it down.  Jerks.  I’ll try to put another song or two up next week when our internet is faster.

After about an hour of piano jamming, we all went up to the Sixthman suite where Marc Broussard, Oakhurst, Roddie Romero, The August, and Heather Luttrell (Hee Haw Lutter?) were already jamming.  Once we got up there, all of the artists took turns playing songs together, and we all just hung out for awhile and ate chicken wings.

Not bad for a Thursday night.

I’m a little jealous…I have to admit. I am VERY happy for you, but a little jealous…or maybe I just wish I was with you.

    xxoo

I never even made it to an introduction…and yet Hee Haw Lutter lives on the interweb. Sorry Heather

    Hi Lauren,
I think your experince describes perfectly what I experniced on the cruise. I had not attended last years cruise so didnt really know what to expect, anyway back to my comment. In my experince if you were part of the sixthman team or in some way with the artist it was kind of like very awkward in that the performers were isolated and not very visible unless you were able to somehow meet them as not another bothersome fan. Weather or not this was true it still seemed to me very awkward. I am not really a big groupie and sort of thought that there would be more interaction. I do have to say that Shawn Mullens was one who really kind of hung out. However your story as exicting as it was for you shows what I mean. it was you and them not us with you.

    thanks

I didn’t find the artists hard to approach at all as long as you did it in a respectful real person way they were very gracious…I had the very same experience with the music and the atmosphere and the artists that you did Lauren. I am not a player but, I would gladly join you all in the jam next year!
Thanks for working so hard so we could enjoy…

Hey FLS, I understand where you’re coming from; I guess it just comes down to being in the right place at the right time.

In both nights I saw Brandi Carlile in the casino she was sitting with guests at the blackjack table, joined a guest to sing a song on the piano in Gatsby’s, and gladly hung out with guests after her sets.

I met a nice couple from Australia who ran into Ed from the Barenaked Ladies in a hallway. After two minutes of conversation, they both sat down on a set of stairs and traded songs back and forth on a guitar.

It really comes down to each artist’s individual personality: Just like normal people, some are outgoing, others are more personal, and others brought their families.

Personally, I saw Bonepony, Roddie Romero and the Hub City All Stars, Oakhurst, various members of other bands, and Girlyman EVERYWHERE interacting with guests and trading stories.

I personally had a blast. I found most of the artsists and guests to be pretty “normal”??? Some I found approachable and fun, some, I didn’t have much in common with, and some I had nothing in common with, and really was happy to let them be them, and me be me!

Oops, I hit the “enter” key before I ment to…. the only real complaint I have, is that my bride, (the lovely Patrice) has refused to stand by the kitchen entrance and “spritz” my hands with sanitizer whenever I am looking for something to eat!!

I ran into many people who found this cruise on their favorite artists’ websites and were thrilled to have their hats, programs and CD’s signed by them. They just walked up to them and initiated a conversation-all were pretty nice when approached. I’m sure you wouldn’t have been considered a “bothersome fan” :-)

Hey Lauren, it’s the other Lauren. Had fun playing black jack with you guys. I need to get hold of that picture of me Andy and Brandi at the end of the night with the two big stacks of chips on the table.

Very nice to hang out with everyone. You all rock.

Jacky’s photos are great!! – especially like the ones from Samana! – really captured the natural wonders of the place. All we did there was race around like wild men on speedboats- a real high but not great for sightseeing!
