johnny-cashYou know my motto- anything worth doing is worth not planning and hoping it turns out all right.

Thank god Lauren, Kelly, and Melissa don’t share that attitude. We hosted our very first Johnny Cash Throwdown tonight, and to be quite honest, I was pretty sure I was going to have rocks thrown at my head by the end of it.

The idea stared out as something completely different than what it became. It went through so many changes, I wasn’t even clear on what it had turned into. Eventually, thanks to my gals with the organizational skills, it became pretty freaking awesome. We had a backing band who played Johnny Cash songs, and we drew names out of a hat to let guests perform. Kind of like live band karaoke, only with Johnny Cash.

We all had trepidations – the room was tiny, the chairs were in a horrible configuration, we weren’t even quite sure if the bands knew what they were doing. Well, we got the chairs figured out, and Oakhurst came through for us, as always. They were joined by Jeff Holmes, and the event was hosted by Marc Broussard. Webb Wilder even made a guest appearance and sang a few songs!

Marc called the first guest up to play, and from the first few chords of “Ring of Fire,” I knew all my worrying was just plain useless. The room was packed, the music was jumping, and the energy was electric. Who doesn’t have a blast belting out Johnny Cash classics?

Melissa leaned over to me and said, “You know, I think we can pull anything off.” I think she’s right.

Ah, Cayamo, te amo…

I take it this throwdown was in honor of Mr. Cash’s birthday? Sounds like it was a success.

You know, there’s been talk about honoring some celebrity birthdays on TRB X next year. How about a David Bowie Throwdown? Put out the call for a backing band to glam up as the Spiders?

That was awesome. I wish I could have been there. I’d have sung, “Folsom Prison Blues.”
