shakespeare.gifWhat’s in a cruise? That which we call Simple Man
By any other name would not be as sweet.

I know Shakespeare would agree.

A band that has songs such as “Ballad of Curtis Loew”, “All I Can Do is Write About It”, and especially “What’s Your Name?” would make even ‘ol William himself dance in his knickers.

Poetry oozes from song to song.

Just like Shakespeare, Skynyrd  traverses literary genres that even you might not have noticed.

Tragedy strikes as the smell of death surrounds you…

“A Midsummer Nights Dream” would easily incorporate words like It was the needle and the spoon
And a trip to the moon
Took me away, took me away….

I can even hear Romeo romantically saying these words to Juliet as he left Verona…

For I must be traveling on, now,
cause there’s too many places Ive got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn’t be the same.
cause I’m as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.

Okay maybe Romeo wouldn’t say that to Juliet but there is some Shakespearian character out there that would totally embrace that feeling. We would cry as we heard the prose in iambic pentameter move from his lips, and we would hold that lighter steady above our head to light his way.

So I consider myself lucky.  I am surrounded by scholars and for the next three days they get to teach me their story.  Poets. Wise men and women.

And while Shakespeare might have fancied a sherry or a glass of red wine,  I think even he would sip on a cold Budweiser this trip.  He would toast to the ones who weren’t lucky enough to join us, marry us, or work for Sixthman.

After all Shakespeare wrote it best in Twelfth Night…

If music be the food of love, play on

And play on Skynyrd has, will, and is….enough to make any poet jealous.
