Marine or Astronaut

A few years ago, a friend of mine shared a theory that most of us are either a “Marine” or an “Astronaut” in regards to our approach to life.

If we are a Marine, then we are prone to move into action quickly and make decisions based off of a minimum amount of information.  This kind of person would be likely to “schedule a parade first and then get the permit second”.

If we are an Astronaut, then we will gather as much information as we can before committing to a decision.  Expect this personality to “measure twice and cut once”.

As it was explained to me, neither is superior and while the Marine will take many hills successfully, he will likely lose a few soldiers and a few battles.

The Astronaut will be precise in execution, however, may miss windows of opportunities due to the time it takes to prepare.

I am a Marine.  What are you?

It’s funny, for all the major stuff in my life, I’m definitely a Marine. I decided to attend Vanderbilt after spending 15 minutes on the campus and only looking at two other schools. It just felt right. I moved in not knowing a single person.

When I made the decision to move from San Diego (which I had moved to on a whim in the first place) to Atlanta, I didn’t have a job or know where I was going to live. I just figured it would work itself out.

However, when I bought a digital camera 2 months ago, I spent an entire week of scanning every reader review of every camera ever made before finally deciding on one.

    Does that make me backwards?

I’m with Steve. Is it possible that I’m both? In my personal life I tend to act first and ask questions later, but anyone who’s ever been in a work meeting with me will probably recognize that I can be a bit of a Debi Downer when I try to poke holes in every new idea before I’ll sign off on it.

Maybe I’m a Marine from outer space?

I’m an astronaut all the way!!

100% marine. Ray Bradbury once said, “Go to the edge of the cliff and jump off. Build your wings on the way down.” That’s how I roll.

I was about to say I’m an Astronaut, plain and simple. But then I began to consider moments when I have damned the torpedos and jumped right into something. I took a long time deciding on where to pursue my Master’s, but then dropped everything to take up Travel Nursing and go around the country. I’m sure every Astronaut has a little Marine in them, and vice versa. Overall, I’ll say Astronaut… and yes, a few opportunities have passed me by while I was ruminating… or was I vacillating? lol!
