I know it’s super short notice, but I’m going to Houston and Austin this weekend and have made almost no plans for when I actually get there. There are a couple things I’ve been told that I MUST do:
*eat at Lupe’s Mexican restaurant in Houston – supposedly houses the best fajita’s on this side of the border
*eat at the Salt Lick in Austin – it’s a bring your own beer bbq joint that serves to the table family style…sausage, brisket, mac and cheese, I don’t think Austin can screw this up.
*float down the Guadalupe on a tube with a beer raft in tow – hopefully after the Mexican and BBQ
*go horse back riding in Austin – this was my idea – hopefully before Mexican and BBQ…
So that’s all I’ve got. And I have 9 days to fill up with life changing memorable activities. Anybody have any advice on what is a MUST DO in these Texas cities??
Help!

Too many things to suggest for just a weekend trip so I’ll just add this one thing…finish your float on the Guadalupe at the Pat Green show at White Water Rocks (http://www.whitewaterrocks.com/)
It’s my favorite TX outdoor venue by a river (which still leaves room for Stubb’s to be my favorite TX outdoor venue).
My cats have me on house arrest after being in ATL for two weekends in row. Otherwise I’d join you in Austin.

Eat at Trudi’s in Austin and have a Mexican Martini. Best drink ever. They’ll only give you two

A lot of my suggestions involve food
-
1) Eat Migas (a breakfast dish) at Trudy’s in Austin (go to the 29th st. location if possible – best atmosphere – esp on patio!)
2) Have a Mexican Martini at Trudy’s & at the Cedar Door (downtown)
3) Go see some live music in Austin – try to see some at Antone’s
4) go to the Grist Mill for dinner or lunch in New Braufels after floating the Guadalupe – while you’re waiting for a table, check out Gruene Hall next door.
That’s all I got for now – will let you know as I think of others.

one more thing – Lupe Tortilla’s is DEFINITELY the best place in Texas for Fajitas – but get the BEEF ones…way better than their chicken. Also, get the queso!

Go to Barton Springs. But make sure it’s a crazy hot day cause that’s some of the coldest water I have ever been in.

Austin is the birthplace of modern roller derby! They have two leagues both banked track and flat track. Their flat track travel team is one of the best in the nation, and their home team championship is this SUNDAY!! Please go so that Barb, Laura, May and I may live vicariously through you. http://www.txrollergirls.com/

There’s a great tapas place in downtown Austin called Malaga. It’s amazing. I can’t believe Gail didn’t mention it…

Catch a good musical performance at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck in Houston. It doesn’t really matter who’s playing–everyone they bring in is great!
