Every year around this time we engage the managers of the artists we are targeting for next year’s cruises. And every year, we get a handful of managers tell us that they would like to be a part of the cruise but they can’t commit this far in advance because their artist could be TOO huge by the time we sail and could potentially miss a bigger opportunity like playing Madison Square Garden.

It’s never our place to predict whether we think the artist is on that track or not. However, we have no problem reminding them that the success of any artist is directly tied to the type of relationship they have with their fans. We also let them know that every artist should make time to spend a few days with some of the most passionate music fans in an intimate environment. After all, our guests are the ones most likely to spread the word about the artist to their peers once they return home. We often hear from artists who perform on our cruises that they see a dozen or so guests with friends at their shows after the event and it always makes us feel good to see the experience live beyond the ship.

Sometimes our position is received well and the artist jumps on board immediately and other times we wait for another year to pass and check in with the manager to see how its going. This year we were able to at least let them know that John Mayer, Barenaked Ladies and another 80 or so artists who joined us this year are ready to commit to next year because they know that spending time with real music fans is always the best place to be.

So if Madison Square Garden calls, they probably want you bad enough to wait one week and certainly could not hold it against you that you took your fans on vacation with you.

…and the addiction continues to spread. Congrats to Sixthman and all of us – from all of us.

I would submit, humbly, that I would much rather play on a cruise ship in the Carribbean for a week, surrounded by people who ADORE music and who actually LISTEN, than to play big, silly ol’ Madison Square. I promise, I would never put you guys off for that.

    Cross my heart.

P.S. A fan directed me to this blog and I wanted to thank you for your kind words on your previous entry. I’m glad you liked what you heard. Blessings…

Andy you hit the nail on the head. I didn’t know who Shawn Mullins or Edwin McCain were before the trip. I went to my library and heard their albums and fell in love with their music. I didn’t realize their big hits until they played them on the ship. Lullaby and I’ll be. They were both so friendly and fun to talk with during the cruise. I also loved Holly Williams and Chris Janson. You bet I’ll watch for them to come play in town and I’ll bring my friends along.

Hopefully I can make this short & sweet.
Just a year ago February my bff and I made a trip to NY to see John Mayer at Madison Square Garden, (we’re from California and had never been to NYC before) this was quite a big deal for us, being moms, having jobs & lifes responsibilites and all, but we treated ourselves big time, thinking “when would we ever have such an opportunity ?”….well sooner than we could imagine, because not long after that incredible trip we heard about the MCC…knowing that we may be pushing our luck just a bit we decided that we had to be on that ship somehow, someway, nothing was going to stop us. So we made it happen and are so glad we did. What an unbelievable few days. The music was phenomenal and we met great people (excluding tambourine girl! sorry it had to be said)
We just want to say THANKS TO ANDY for the incredible experience and for all you do. What a kind (and patient) person. We look forward to MCC ’09, one way or another!!!

I agree completely. Mayercraft was an unbelievable experience because of its relative intimacy. I didn’t know the other artists that were booked and I’m now an avid fan of almost all of them. And I’ve spread the word about these up and comming stars. Kudos to you and the artists for this concept. I’m in for next year.

Go on Andy, name some names! Tell us who thinks they’ve got somewhere better to be next Feb than cruising around the Caribbean with their musical heros?

Andy, just saw Richard Shindell in Port Washington, New York, this past Saturday night. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call his manager and see if he’ll do Cayamo 2009. Thanks!

  • Trudi

Amen! You tell ‘em, Andy! ;)

Please, please, please have Ryan Bingham again! LOVED him, can’t go a day without hearing that voice of his. In fact, please invite EVERYONE back from Cayamo…why mess with a good thing?! Great job on the entire cruise.
